BRIEF HISTORY OF EBONY STATE UNIVERSITY

What became the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki was an offshoot of the Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH). The Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH), was initiated by a resolution of the then Military Administration of Anambra State, later upheld by the then civilian administration of Jim Nwobodo, which led to the establishment of ASUTECH on July 30 1980 by law no 7 of 1980. By this establishment, ASUTECH became the first University of Science and Technology in Nigeria.

At the inception of ASUTECH, it operated a four campus structure; The Enugu Campus , Abakaliki Campus, Awka Campus and the Nnewi Campus. The  Abakaliki Campus housed the faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. On August 27, 1991, during the creation of 9 new states, Enugu State was carved out from Anambra state thus the ASUTECH Campuses at Enugu and Abakaliki were acquired by the Enugu State Government due to regional boundaries. The two Campus under Edict no. 33 of 1991 were renamed and they became the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) with the Abakaliki Campus still retaining its status as the new ESUT Faculty of Agricultural Science.

In 1996, additional six states were created one of which was Ebonyi State. The newly created Ebonyi State through Edict no 5 took over the Abakaliki Campus of ESUT and it became Ebonyi State University College. However,  in 1999, through the Ebonyi State University Law No 7, the University College was upgraded to a full fledged University. This feat was achieved by the executive approval of the then Executive Governor of the State His Excellency, Dr. Sam Egwu.

Having attained an independent status, Professor Fidelis Ogah became the first Vice Chancellor of the institution, new academic faculties and departments were created and academic activities took off fully uninterrupted.
