Brief History of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI) is one of the young Federal Universities established in Nigeria within the last decade. It was established on February 26th, 2011 in Ndufu Alike Ikwo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Eastern Nigeria.

The idea of creating more Federal universities in Nigeria in areas perceived to be educationally backward and disadvantaged was conceived in the last quarter of 2010. This idea was put in place to grant young secondary school leavers across the area more access to higher education. In this regard, the Federal Government decided to equitably establish more Federal Government owned universities in the country. To ensure the spread of higher educational opportunities and equitable distribution of these new Universities across the nation, the Universities had to be located in those states which had no Federal Government owned universities.

Ebonyi State as at that time doubled as the only state in the Eastern region without a Federal University and an educationally backward state so it wasn’t surprising that one of the universities was marked to be located there. It was on this note that the Federal University Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was established alongside eight other universities in the first quarter of 2011. The other eight new universities are located in Dutse (Jigawa State), Dutsin-Ma (Katsina State), Kashere (Gombe State), Lokoja (Kogi State), Lafia (Nasarawa State), Otuoke (Bayelsa State), Wukari (Taraba State), and Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti State).
